Saint Gregory the Great

Saint Gregory was born in 540, he was the son of a wealthy Roman Senator and his mother was Saint Silvia. After a good education Saint Gregory became a priest and served in multiple positions like Rome, Constantinople. He founded six monasteries in Sicily and one more in Rome. He also became a Benedictine monk. At age Fifty he was elected Pope. Saint Gregory was a strong and direct Pope. He removed priests from office that were corrupt or incompetent and forbade taking money for many services. He also spent the majority of the papal treasury to care for the victims of plague and famine. He is known for his reform of the liturgy.  He revised and promoted the “Gregorian” chant. He was very concerned about the conversion of England, sending 40 monks from his own monastery. He wrote many works during his lifetime. He died in 640.

Also happy feast day to all those celebrating St Pius X feast day, we will soon release an article about the differing calendars within Roman Catholic Church.
